You only pay the relevant fees associated with a transaction, IF and WHEN you complete the transaction.

Why does PayByGold do all of its conversions in Grams of Gold?
PayByGold deals in various national currencies. As a standard conversion between those currencies, PBG uses the price of gold as the common denominator. Furthermore, PBG deals with various Digital Gold Currencies that are denominated in Grams of Gold so using Gold for standard conversions is an obvious choice.
